Why does a state university need private support?DSU, as a public university, receives funding from the state to assist with some costs of delivering education. State assistance is critically important, but it continues to decline as a percentage of the university's total operating budget, making private contributions from alumni and friends increasingly important, if DSU is to fulfill its mission of excellence in education, research, and service. How does the Foundation serve the university? The Dakota State University Foundation exists solely for the DSU’s benefit, serving as the channel for private gifts to all areas of the university. Located in the DSU Alumni & Foundation building, the Foundation is governed by a board of directors that elects its officers and appoints its staff. Through annual giving programs, planned gifts (via wills, trusts, and other methods of giving), and special-purpose campaigns, the Foundation works with the 3 DSU colleges and other units (such as the Library, arts facilities and athletics program) to generate private support from alumni and friends. What are the DSU’s fund-raising priorities and who sets them?Because the DSU Foundation was established to facilitate the university's mission, the Foundation's major initiatives are set by the University's President and central administration with the concurrence of the Foundation's management group and Board of Trustees. How does the DSU Foundation work with the Alumni Association? The DSU Foundation and the Dakota State Alumni Association are partners in encouraging the full participation of alumni and friends in advancing the institution. The Dakota State Alumni Association maintains and strengthens the ties between graduates and the university. The association serves more than 10,000 members and brings graduates and friends together through programs such as First Tuesdays and Thursdays, reunions, and homecoming. The Dakota State Foundation is the preferred channel for private gifts to all areas of the University. |
